Turning Stone nightclub to open in May

VERONA - Add dancing to the list of activities that can be done at Turning Stone Resort and Casino.

The Oneida Indian Nation's latest venture at the resort is a nightclub set to open in mid-May.

Lava - a 21,000-square-foot nightclub - will join the gambling, concerts and events, golf courses, restaurants, and spa offerings at Turning Stone.

"Hopefully, it'll provide more entertainment and more options," says Andrew, vice president of food and beverage services at the resort.

Work on the $10 million construction project began last fall. The Princeton Companies, based in Purcellville, Va., is the architectural designer and builder. Zausmer-Frisch Design and Buildings of Syracuse is the interior designer for the two-level club. The club is located on the west end of the resort. Features will include 60-foot high ceilings and three waterfalls. Along with state-of-the-art video and light equipment, the club will also have valet parking.

"We also have an outdoor heated area with cabanas," Turning Stone's says. That area will provide 5,000 square feet of outdoor heated space in the fall and spring.

The nightclub will fill an entertainment void at the resort for nights when there aren't concerts or other events, he says.

"We don't have enough late night entertainment," he says.

The plan is to offer different types of dancing through theme nights, he says. One night might feature disco dancing, while the next is all about ballroom dancing to Big Band music.

"One night, if people like country and western, they can come out for a nice dinner and do some country-western dancing," he says.

The club gives overnight guests and others at the resort an entertainment option in the evening besides heading to the gaming floors. It's in keeping with the Nation's goal to transform Turning Stone from just a casino into a full-scale resort. The club's total capacity will range between 900 and 1,200.

No alcohol will be served at the club, but he says he does not expect that to impact the number of visitors. Alcohol is not served anywhere at the resort, although the Nation does have a liquor-license application pending with the state. A cover charge is being discussed, but no amount has been set yet. The club will also generate revenue from selling snacks and nonalcoholic drinks, including energy drinks such as Powerade, Enviga, Full Throttle, Tab Energy, Rock Star, and Red Bull.

He says Turning Stone has hosted dancing events in other areas of the resort, like the Showroom, in the past with great success.

The resort will add about 70 full- and part-time employees when the nightclub is open, bringing the Nation's total employment to nearly 5,000.

* Other projects in the works at Turning Stone include a tennis facility complete with an indoor tennis dome and outdoor courts, says Mark, director of media relations for the Nation.

"I think they're clearing out that area now," in preparation, he says.

A helicopter pad "for guests that may want to come in that way," is also in the planning stages, he says.

Turning Stone attracted nearly 4.5 million visitors in fiscalyear 2005, up from 3.5 million in 2000 and almost 2.1 million in 1995, according to an environmental-impact statement (EIS) filed with the fed eral Bureau of Indian Affairs. Overall, the Nation's business enterprises generated over $400 million in revenue, including over $300 million at the Turning Stone resort - of which $215 million came from gaming.
